John's Grill
Steaks & seafood offered in an old-school, wood-paneled space with photos of famous past patrons.
John's Grill, which Esquire magazine called one of America's top 10 restaurants, is as much a historic fixture of San Francisco as the Golden Gate Bridge and the cable cars. Come for lunch or dinner and you’re likely to rub shoulders with the mayor, a police chief or two, a movie star, or a huddle of technology titans.

John’s Grill is widely known for its carefully curated menu of salads, steak, seafood, pasta, and sandwiches, all at reasonable prices. The restaurant’s signature dish is Sam Spade’s Lamb Chops, named for author Dashiell Hammett’s famed private eye. Hammett, a frequent customer of John’s Grill, had Spade wolfing down a plate of John’s “chops, baked potato, and sliced tomatoes.” The restaurant has a subtle motif adapted from the Hammett classic, “The Maltese Falcon,” and there’s a statue of the infamous black bird in a case on the second floor. Wine list is also available.
