The Spielraum Theater exists because a young director, after studying at the Max Reinhardt Seminar or at the then University of Music and Performing Arts, decided to work independently and continuously with a young ensemble.

In 1983 Gerhard found Werdeker opened his first Spielraum in a rustic basement in the 15th district, Palmgasse 8. Theater was made there for almost six years, initially for two years without public support. A colorful schedule with numerous premieres and premieres and nine small stage awards marks the beginning of the Spielraum history.
