It was designed by architects Alejandro Prieto and Luis Zedillo Castillo. It opened on May 19, 1960 with the play Marco Polo, by Eugene O'Neil, directed by Ignacio Retes, with performances by José Gález, José Elías Moreno, Claudio Brook and Leonor Llausás.
