The Seurasaari Outdoor Museum was founded in 1909 on the island located on the outskirts of what was then Helsinki, which from the 1890s was a popular hiking destination for Helsinki residents. Seurasaari, which was originally a pasture for the Meilahti manor, became the property of the city of Helsinki in the 1880s. The city leased the island to the Helsinki distillery company, whose task was to establish a public park on the island. Kansanpuisto was especially intended as a leisure place for the city's working population. The island became a popular hiking destination and the island's services were developed by building, among other things, a restaurant, dance stages, a sports and party field, and a swimming pool.
