On the American side of the Canadian border, lies the city of Detroit. Home to good, old-fashioned Midwestern industry, the city the car built is also the city that built the car, earning Detroit the moniker “The Motor City,” or “Motown,” for short. The birthplace of Motown Records gave birth to the classic “Motown sound” of rhythm and blues. In the early ’90s, underground rave parties in factories spawned the industrial style of electronic music. Detroit has truly pioneered the landscape of American music, but today you will find a different kind of pioneer: the urban pioneer. Once an example of urban decay, Detroit has risen from the ashes as a model of urban renewal. It’s a scene, a revival, a movement–the greatest comeback ever.
