Opened in 1907, the Surrogate’s Courthouse, also known as the Hall of Records, was designed in a BeauxArts style by John R. Thomas. Its exterior features 54 sculptures by prize-winning artists Philip Martiny and Henry Kirke Bush-Brown. The seven-story, steel-framed building is faced with granite from Hallowell, Maine, and was intended to be fireproof to safely store the City’s records. Both the exterior and interior are designated New York City Landmarks. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Note: This building does not require an Office of Court Administration surcharge.
