Before Gilley's, there was the Esquire Ballroom. In 1955, a huge new ballroom and tavern was built on what then was the outskirts of Houston on Hempstead Highway. The place known as the Esquire Ballroom, hosted the likes of Willie Nelson, George Jones and Patsy Cline
