Inspired by his travels in Italy with the painter, Allan Ramsay, Sir Alexander commissioned the Norrie family to paint Italian-style landscapes on the panelling of his dining room. Re-igniting Prestonfield's reputation for genial hospitality, he played generous host to leading thinkers, writers, and artists of the day including David Hume, Benjamin Franklin, Dr Samuel Johnson, and his biographer, Boswell, plus Ramsay himself whose fine portraits of Sir Alexander and his wife remain at Prestonfield. The Italian Room is available for guests today and is probably Edinburgh's most sought-after private dining room. Enjoy your pre-drinks reception in the Whisky Room which features unusual elk antler furniture, antique equestrian portraits as well as an extensive display of Scottish quality malts.
