Klein Field at Sunken Diamond
Often called the most beautiful college baseball facility in the country, Klein Field at Sunken Diamond is the home to Stanford Baseball, and is located a short distance south of Stanford Stadium.
The original dimensions were 360 feet to left field, 350 to right, and 500 feet to center. In 1978, a new 7-foot high fence was installed, bringing the dimensions to the current 335 to both left and right field, and 400 to center. The outfield fence height was increased to 10 feet in 1995. Major renovation prior to the 2001 season added to Sunken Diamond’s beauty. The facelift included new dugouts, a three-tier press box, and stadium-style seating which brought the seated capacity to 2,113. Popular seating on the famous grass berms on both the first and third base sides give Klein Field at Sunken Diamond a total capacity of 4,000. The Bud D. Klein Varsity Clubhouse was completed prior to the 1988 season. The structure includes the locker room, coaches’ offices, training room, equipment room, and alumni reception room (Diamond Suite). The clubhouse was made possible by Bud Klein and his children Tom, Dick, Steve and Kathy. The original fences measured 360 feet in left field, 500 feet in center and 350 feet in right. In 1978, a seven-foot high permanent inner fence was installed with measurements of 335 in left, 400 in center and 335 in right, replacing a portable fence of the same dimensions used in 1966. The seven-foot fence was increased to 10 feet in 1995. On April 26, 2008, the Klein family children dedicated Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in honor of their father for his love of the game of baseball and fond memories of his experiences at Sunken Diamond.
