Overview
From Kamari Chelsea
Situation: In June 2016, the style team from Parkwood Entertainment (a Beyoncé Knowles company) contacted Kamari to help them develop a joint birthday and graduation celebration for Sasha and Malia Obama as a gift from Beyoncé herself. The event would need to take place before The Formation World Tour in Baltimore, Maryland’s M&T Bank Arts Stadium.
Challenge: Kamari needed to develop an event concept, source an events team, and transform a space backstage within 12 hours, to host a royal lounge with snacks and décor for the Obama girls and 20 of their friends to hang out and celebrate before the concert.
Solution: Kamari leveraged a rolodex of contacts within the events industry – starting with the Style Editor at Washingtonian magazine – to identify the region’s best event planners, florists, and caterers. After finding a team led by the region’s top event planner and securing Parkwood’s approval to work with them, she worked with Parkwood to negotiate budget and contracts within the wee hours the morning before the event.
With a style team on board and approved, she then worked around the clock with the lead event planner and Parkwood’s stylist to develop an event theme (lemonade), color scheme (purple to symbolize royalty) and snack bar. She then oversaw the logistics, execution, and set-up all before 3pm the day of the event.
The event was such a hit that FLOTUS Michelle Obama and her stylists joined the party, posting about it on their social media pages.
