Daniel and Eugene Levy selected AKJOHNSTON as the vendor to ideate, design, produce, fabricate and tour the entire 7,000 square foot activation. Additionally, AKJOHNSTON needed to build sets for multiple venues, including an elevator to the 4th floor and 9-foot ceilings in NYC! All but five props in the space are hand-made by AKJOHNSTON’s Fabrication Studio. We were hired in July, but by the time production asked for props, furniture and sets to be shipped for the pop-up, they had already been recycled in Toronto. We then discovered that 95% of the props and sets had no reference drawings, dimensions or otherwise - so we spent countless hours studying set photography and episodes to recreate every single detail by hand - including hand-painted murals and printing of every menu and paper good seen in house and within only four weeks! Collectively this activation in six live days plus press events will have hosted approximately 6,000 guests who walked through sets and engaged with 13 moments from the seasons of the show, including about 500 props and set decoration that brings it to life in ways that pop-ups typically fall short.
