In conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, Smithsonian Channel released two documentaries: “The Day We Walked on the Moon” and “Apollo’s Moonshot”. To create buzz for those shows while setting them apart from the crowded landscape of Apollo events and content, Advantage created an immersive space that captured a bit of the magic that surrounded June 20, 1069.
The invitation-only media event recreated the sights, sounds and tastes of 1960s American life. Guests hit the glam stations to receive themed hair and makeup, then visited a living room vignette where they could gather around the TV with “Mom and Dad” and watch the moon landing. Spam, meatloaf, TV dinners, Gimlets and Manhattans, and Jell-O molds provided a taste of the times, and a curated playlist of 60s hits kept the party going.
Actors portraying Mission Control staff recreated the celebratory moment the team received confirmation of those first steps, and guests were even able to put on an astronaut helmet and plant a flag on the moon, receiving a shareable video of their Neil Armstrong moment. Additional touches included moon boot graphics leading guests around the venue, a wall of pop culture, politics, sports and music facts from 1969, costumed wait staff, and a step and repeat of hanging moon rocks.
