Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story is a groundbreaking anthology horror drama on FX Networks. To create buzz and excitement around the much-anticipated ninth installment, which is Mr. Murphy’s homage to 80’s slasher films, FX hosted a fully immersive, experiential activation at a remote 110-acre campsite in Los Angeles.
On Friday, September 13, under a full moon, FX invited select influencers, VIPs and sweepstakes winners and put them right in the heart of the property and the year 1984. Our guests, who enthusiastically assumed the roles CITs (Counselors in Training), spent the night at Camp Redwood, a fully functioning, expansive summer camp setting located deep in the wooded hills of Los Angeles. Set on the day before campers were scheduled to arrive, our CITs participated in multiple camp training activities (all through the lens of AHS: 1984) and became participants in a long-standing, disturbing tale about the camp’s history and its past horrors.
From the time they were picked up in white Camp Redwood vans and taken to the remote campground, to the moment they departed the next morning, each guest lived out their horror fantasies via a multi-track storyline that had them interact with a myriad of camp staff including a creepy groundskeeper, camp director and nurse, lead counselors, kitchen staff, wayward hikers and of course, shadowy killers.
