Walking through the different rooms and hallways of the National Museum of Art of Guatemala (MUNAG) makes you reflect on the ancient heritage that Guatemalans possess and which is reflected in unparalleled works of art. Planned and carried out in its entirety by the Government of the President of the Republic, Dr. Alejandro Giammattei, through the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the MUNAG marks the route for the modernization of state museums and cultural centers that protect heritage assets that have spun the cultural wealth of more than three thousand years of the country. The MUNAG is located in the facilities of the Royal Palace of the Captains General. The building has been modified and adapted since the 16th century for different functions. However, it was not until 1776, when it occupied the seat of administrative and political power of the Kingdom of Guatemala. It is located in front of the central park of La Antigua Guatemala, a place that King Felipe II granted the title of “The very noble and very Loyal City of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala” in 1566. The colonial city was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, next to the Tikal National Park, in 1979.
