In a way, the history of the Art Pavilion is also the history of 20th-century fine art in Croatia. It is the oldest exhibition space in the Slavic South and the only facility that was purpose-built for holding large, representative exhibitions. Throughout its existence of 100 years, almost all the most striking exhibitions were held in the exhibition space of the Pavilion, the significance of which exceeded the limits of the city of Zagreb. Exhibitions of groups, movements, and currents were held there - the foundations of the tradition of painting and sculpture modernity in Croatia were created here. Between the two world wars, everything that was the most progressive in art gathered in that space - the entire galaxy of artists who performed here at that time, in fact, make up Croatian art and cultural history.
