Gwangmyeong Cave (formerly Siheung Mine), which was developed by the Japanese Empire in 1912 for the purpose of extracting resources, is an industrial heritage that preserves traces of modernization and industrialization after liberation as well as a site of conscription and exploitation during the Japanese colonial period. After the mine was closed in 1972, Gwangmyeong Cave, which had been used as a salted shrimp warehouse and was dormant for 40 years, was purchased by the city of Gwangmyeong in 2011 and transformed into a historical and cultural tourist attraction.
