Rocco Moretto VFW Post 2348

On June 6, 2013 The Long Island City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2348 located in Astoria, NY was officially renamed after World War II veteran and Astoria resident Rocco Moretto, who was recognized for his service and longtime dedication to the post.Rocco Moretto is a U.S. Army veteran, who was drafted in February 1943 and served in Europe as a combat infantryman with Co. C, 26th Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He landed with his unit on Omaha Beach in Normandy June 6, 1944, and fought with his unit in every major engagement for the rest of World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Huertgen Forest. He remained in combat for 11 months until May 8, 1945, known as Victory in Europe Day.During that period, Moretto was one of only two men from his original company of 219 who survived without being captured or wounded. He was discharged as a staff sergeant and returned home in 1945.Following the war, Moretto worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, later Amtrak, until he retired in 1985. He has received a number of honors, including in 2004 when he was presented the Legion of Honor Award from the government of France, the country’s highest military honor. Moretto is a longtime member of the United War Veterans Council of New York, post commander of American Legion Post 6 in Manhattan and has been affiliated with VFW Post 2348 for more than 45 years.

Situated on a bustling Astoria block just steps from the n/q station, [sek’ənd sun] is a versatile, laid-back cocktail bar that thrives on expert taste and the thirst for new possibilities. it is the sophomore effort by a pair of literal second sons, purveyors Derrek Vernon and Jay Zimmerman of Williamsburg’s [ba’sik], and while the numerological coincidences imply mystical intrigue, the bar's philosophy is simple: to bring delicious cocktails to an exciting locale. [sek’ənd sun]’s knowledgeable bar staff serve as friendly guides through the drink selection, including an array of signature cocktails brimming with originality. a formidable roster of beers is also available, as is a full menu of bar [snacks], small plates called [sekends], and [mains]. Koyo means "Autumnal Foliage" which refers to the changing of Japanese maple tree leaves which signals the change of a seasonal. Koyo has a strong focus on seasonality and uses ingredients at their peak during that season to create a Kaiseki-inspired multi-sensory dining experience.There are four seasons in a year and at Koyo, the menu also changes four times a year or every three months. With each and every seasonal menu change, the team at Koyo incorporates various techniques and cooking styles that follow the progression of a traditional Kaiseki but are served in an Omakase format. ​We invite each and every guest to come with an open mind and enjoy every dish that the team at Koyo has curated.
